The lawyer you hire is probably newer to the job than you would guess. We looked at the year of call to the bar for every lawyer in the LawOnline directory who lists one, and the centre of gravity sits firmly in the last fifteen years. The median lawyer with a known call year came to the bar in 2013. More than half were called in 2010 or later.
That's a snapshot of our own listings as of September 2026, not a census of the whole profession, and the shape has a clear explanation that we'll get to. Here's the picture first:
What the numbers show
Of the 41,326 lawyers listed across our directory, 21,255 state the year they were called to the bar. Among that group, the trend is hard to miss. The 2010s alone account for 6,283 lawyers. The 2020s, only partway through the decade, have already added 5,913. Put those two decades together and you get 12,196 lawyers, or 57 percent of everyone with a known call year. The 1970s, by contrast, contribute 789.
The single-year median lands in 2013. In plain terms, if you lined up every lawyer in our directory by seniority, the one standing in the middle earned the right to practise about a dozen years ago.
Why the profession skews recent
Some of this is real growth. Canada has been minting lawyers at a faster clip, and law schools have expanded to match. Two brand-new law schools opened their doors in the last dozen years, Lakehead University's Bora Laskin Faculty of Law in 2013 and Toronto Metropolitan University's Lincoln Alexander School of Law in 2020. More than 90 of their graduates already appear in our listings, which tells you how quickly a new class of lawyers moves from the lecture hall into practice.
The wider trend is well documented. The number of practising lawyers in Canada has climbed steadily for decades, according to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, which tracks admissions across every provincial and territorial law society. A younger bar is not a quirk of our data. It is the profession catching up to a country that keeps needing more legal help.
What the numbers don't show
A directory of active law firms will always tilt toward lawyers who are working right now. A lawyer called in 1975 may have retired, moved to the bench, or passed away, and a retired lawyer usually isn't building a firm website for us to find. So the thin bars on the left of the chart undercount how many people were called in those decades. They don't mean the 1970s produced few lawyers. They mean few of those lawyers are still hanging a shingle in 2026.
That caveat trims the size of the shift, but it doesn't erase it. Even among lawyers who are visibly practising today, the balance has tipped toward people who trained in the last fifteen years. The profession you actually encounter when you go looking for a lawyer is a young one.
What it means if you're hiring a lawyer
A newer call year isn't a red flag, and a grey head is not a guarantee. A lawyer called in 2016 has spent a decade in the field, which is plenty for most family, real estate, or small business matters. What you are really buying is relevant experience with your kind of problem, not raw years since law school.
Two practical takeaways. First, ask about experience with your specific issue rather than about age. A lawyer who has run 200 uncontested divorces is the right hire for an uncontested divorce, whether they were called in 2009 or 2019. Second, if seniority genuinely matters for your case, a complex commercial dispute or a serious criminal charge, say so and ask directly how long the lawyer has handled matters like yours.
